Story at a Glance:
After menopause, women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass within 5-7 years.
The rate of bone loss is highest during the first few years post-menopause.
Osteoporosis dramatically increases the risk of fractures, particularly in the hip, spine, and wrist.
Hip fractures are the most serious, with high rates of disability, loss of independence, and mortality.
Neuro Athletes,
Every 19 minutes, a woman breaks her hip. For most women, this statistic feels distant until it isn't. Until it becomes your mother, your aunt, your grandmother—until it becomes you.
As a neurophysiologist fighting cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, I've dedicated my life to understanding and combating the slow erosion of strength, memory, and independence. But there’s a scenario described recently by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Vonda Wright that hit me deeply and compelled me to speak directly to you today.
Imagine a woman in her 70s or 80s, balled up at the foot of her hospital bed, in excruciating pain, wearing a humiliating blue hospital gown. She's just broken her hip—a hip she never gave much thought to, part of a skeleton she mostly ignored. She's lying in her own urine due to untreated pelvic floor weakness, too ashamed to even mention her incontinence.
Her heart is weak from years of self-neglect—always putting everyone else first, always last on her own list. Her bones scream from neglect, her heart struggles under anesthesia, and often, confusion or full-blown dementia clouds her mind.
This is not an uncommon scenario. And heartbreakingly, in the brief moments of lucidity, she turns to her daughter and whispers, “I've not always been like this. Don’t ever let this happen to you. Don’t get old.”
I cannot read those words without emotion. Because the reality is harsh:
30% of women who break their hip will die within a year.
75% of women aged 65 and older report incontinence and pelvic floor weakness.
80% of hip fractures occur in women, often leading to severe declines in quality of life.
But here's the most powerful truth: It doesn't have to be this way.

Healthspan vs. Lifespan
Life expectancy for women is approximately 81 years. But healthspan—the years of active, joyful, independent living—is often far shorter. Women spend their last decades in a decline, regularly visiting doctors, coping with chronic pain, and battling isolation and immobility.
As Dr. Wright emphasizes, "We do not have to become frail. We have the power to age differently."
Honestly, IMO if we invested half as much time maintaining our bones as we do choosing anti-aging creams, we'd probably have enough strength to literally run away from old age. Yet here we are, more concerned about wrinkles than fractures, spending fortunes to look younger while our skeleton quietly turns to dust.
Maybe it’s time we stopped trying to moisturize our way to immortality and started lifting something heavier than our credit cards.
Your Bones, Your Strength, Your Choice
From my own research in Alzheimer's and cognitive decline, I can tell you unequivocally: movement isn't just about muscles and bones; it’s about your brain, your independence, your life.
When we move, lift weights, and strengthen our muscles, our bones become dense and resilient. Our hearts grow stronger, better able to sustain us under physical stress or illness. Our brains respond, maintaining cognitive sharpness and reducing dementia risk.
Here's your call to action, your lifeline to a different future:
Move Your Body: Start with a daily walk. Movement is medicine; it stimulates the longevity protein Klotho, enhancing brain function and muscle strength.
Strengthen Regularly: Your body, even at 70 or 80, can build muscle and bone strength. Weight-bearing exercises protect you from frailty and falls.
Prioritize You: Your health is not an afterthought. Your wellbeing is non-negotiable.
Bone Health and Decline: A Silent Crisis
Your bones are quietly doing heroic work every day, supporting your weight, protecting your organs, and serving as reservoirs for critical minerals. However, after age 30, women naturally begin to lose bone density at an accelerated rate—about 1% per year, which significantly increases after menopause due to reduced estrogen levels.
This silent bone loss, known as osteoporosis, often goes unnoticed until a fracture occurs, dramatically altering your quality of life. But this isn't an inevitable fate; it’s preventable. By proactively engaging in regular physical activities, consuming calcium-rich foods, ensuring adequate vitamin D levels, and consulting your healthcare provider for bone-density assessments, you can fortify your bones, maintaining your independence and vibrancy through every decade.
Why I Do What I Do
I've watched Alzheimer's disease strip women of their memories, independence, and dignity. I do this work because women deserve better. Because my mission is clear:
I want to see women empowered, strong, and resilient.
I want the woman at the foot of the bed to be the exception, not the norm.
I want you and every woman you love to age with strength and joy, fully in control of your life and your future.
We have the power to change the trajectory of aging for women everywhere. It starts today, with you.
With love and determination,
Louisa
