Neuro Athletes,
In a riveting episode of the Neuro Experience Podcast, host Louisa Nicola delves deep into the secrets of nitric oxide with Dr. Nathan Bryan. They reveal the mind-blowing benefits of nitric oxide, from dilating blood vessels and improving blood flow to enhancing cognitive function and boosting the immune system. Dr. Bryan explains that this tiny molecule is crucial for everything from memory recall and exercise performance to preventing chronic diseases like heart disease, Alzheimer's, and diabetes.
Here’s the kicker: despite its monumental importance, most of us are sabotaging our own nitric oxide production daily.
Mouthwash? Fluoride toothpaste? Processed foods? They're all part of the problem.
Team, Big Healthcare isn't just ignoring nitric oxide—they're actively contributing to its deficiency in your body. And don't even get us started on those proton pump inhibitors and other over-the-counter drugs that shut down nitric oxide production altogether.
The Dark Side of Mouthwash: How It's Sabotaging Your Health
1. Destruction of Oral Microbiome: Mouthwash is designed to kill bacteria in the mouth, but it doesn't discriminate between harmful bacteria that cause bad breath and tooth decay and beneficial bacteria that play a crucial role in maintaining overall health. The beneficial bacteria in your mouth are essential for the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that is critical for cardiovascular and brain health.
2. Nitric Oxide Production: Nitric oxide is produced in the body through two main pathways: one involving the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS), and the other involving dietary nitrate and nitrite, which are converted to nitric oxide by oral bacteria. When you use mouthwash, you kill these nitrate-reducing bacteria, significantly reducing the production of nitric oxide. This decrease in nitric oxide can lead to a range of health issues, from high blood pressure to cognitive decline.
3. Impact on Blood Pressure: Several studies have shown that the use of antiseptic mouthwash can lead to an increase in blood pressure. By killing the oral bacteria that convert nitrates to nitric oxide, mouthwash disrupts the body's ability to regulate blood pressure. This can have serious long-term consequences, including an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
4. The Vicious Cycle: Many people use mouthwash for fresh breath, not realizing that they're setting themselves up for bigger health problems down the line. As their nitric oxide levels drop and their blood pressure rises, they may turn to medications that further complicate their health picture, such as antihypertensives that don't address the root cause of their high blood pressure.
5. The Fluoride Factor: Most commercial mouthwashes contain fluoride, which, while beneficial for preventing tooth decay, also acts as an antiseptic. This further disrupts the oral microbiome and reduces the production of nitric oxide. Fluoride's role as a neurotoxin and its potential to disrupt thyroid function add additional layers of concern.
6. Rebuilding the Microbiome: If you've been using mouthwash regularly, it's not too late to reverse the damage. Research indicates that stopping the use of mouthwash can allow your oral microbiome to recover. Within a few days, beneficial bacteria can repopulate the mouth, and your body's ability to produce nitric oxide can begin to return to normal.
7. Alternatives to Mouthwash: For those concerned about oral hygiene without compromising their nitric oxide levels, consider alternatives like oil pulling with coconut oil, using a tongue scraper, or choosing natural, microbiome-friendly oral care products that do not contain harsh antiseptics or fluoride.
The science is clear: nitric oxide is essential for a healthy, well-functioning body. Yet, the mainstream healthcare system remains disturbingly silent on this topic. Instead of empowering you with this life-changing information, they're content to push pills and quick fixes that do nothing to address the root causes of your health issues.
But there’s hope. By understanding how to naturally boost your nitric oxide levels through diet, exercise, and smart supplementation, you can take control of your health.

I stopped using mouthwash 2 years ago and it has most definitely helped...!
And also for men this is an incredibly useful molecule, as when NO production falters, erectile dysfunction is essentially bound to set in. NO dilates the bloodvessels which allows for blood to flow where it is supposed to :) Great post, I have restacked it :)
